Help Your Pupils to Shine With One Goal’s Be A Star Wellbeing Improvement Service

1 in 4 children in the UK are currently living in poverty, making it difficult for schools to educate children while providing support for increasingly complex needs. Mental health issues in children are increasing, while child wellbeing is deteriorating. At One Goal we want all children to get the best start in life, which is why we’ve developed the ‘Be A Star’ Service.

Be a Star is designed to provide innovative and effective solutions to the three core wellbeing problems that our partner primary schools have identified:

three-issues

Three Problems

  • 1Teachers feel they lack the time and specialist knowledge needed to effectively help their pupils with wellbeing needs.
  • 2Schools face increasing pressure to meet national targets, with a strong focus on core curriculum subjects. Few resources are available to help children suffering from wellbeing challenges.
  • 3Pressures of under-resourcing and overstretching have led teachers to leave the profession in record numbers. We now face a severe shortage of professionals able to effectively support children with their wellbeing.

Three Innovative Solutions

  • 1We deliver specialist help to support the wellbeing of pupils across 7 key areas. Our evidence-based programme is tailored to suit the specific needs of the children we work with.
  • 2We focus on the wellbeing of selected pupils without disrupting the school’s timetable, so you can focus on core attainment levels.
  • 3We can place a One Goal Wellbeing Mentor in your school from 1 to 5 days a week, with support being available for 8 hours, and reaching up to 150 pupils each day. This flexible service helps schools funds go further

The ‘Be A Star’ Wellbeing Improvement Framework

We’ve designed our programme around 7 key areas of wellbeing:

We’ve designed our service to provide a comprehensive solution to 7 key wellbeing challenges

BEHAVIOUR

When children’s wellbeing suffers, so does behaviour in the classroom. A 2013 survey by The Teacher Voice Omnibus found that a quarter struggled with behaviour in their school. We work with children to help them identify and manage challenging behaviour, leading to holistically improved outcomes school-wide.

EMOTIONS

At One Goal we work with children suffering from stress, depression and anxiety. We also support pupils who are struggling to regulate their emotions and aggression. This is highly effective at improving outcomes for the whole class, as pupils learn to manage difficult and challenging emotions.

ASPIRATIONS

Poverty has been identified as one of the key areas impacting children’s aspirations and hopes for the future. Many children from deprived backgrounds are unaware of potential future options for them, or lack confidence in their ability to achieve. One Goal’s mentors help children develop their aspirations so they can fulfil their potential.

SELF-ESTEEM

Self-esteem is a core support area for children to improve their wellbeing. Young Minds identifies emotional wellbeing as being one of the clearest indicators of academic achievement, success and satisfaction later in life. One Goal works with children to help them build their self-esteem so that they can improve their emotional and social skills.

TEAM SPIRIT

Building Team Spirit is key to children’s social growth. When children have a positive sense of connection to their peers they are more likely to experience greater wellbeing. We work with children to build their teamwork skills and tackle issues such as bullying – vital to the holistic health of the school.

ACTIVE HEALTH

Wellbeing can be deeply impacted by a lack of physical exercise and access to a good diet. We offer a range of Active Health services that help children to understand the importance of good physical health when it comes to their wellbeing.

RESILIENCE

Many of the schools we work with identify a lack of resilience as being a challenge for their pupils. We work with children to improve their resilience so they are better able to try new activities, push themselves to succeed and grow through challenging circumstances.

A 3 step, 38 week plan for improving children’s wellbeing across the whole school

One Goal has helped thousands of pupils engage with learning and improve their behaviour and wellbeing using the ‘Be a Star’ service. We work collaboratively with you on a 3-step model to improve wellbeing and pupil achievement:

Step 1– Score and evaluate your school against the 7 wellbeing challenges.

Step 2 – Select the areas to improve and the right child-centred approach.

Step 3 – Create the 38 week, school wide wellbeing delivery plan.

Broad Oak Primary School

The impact that One Goal has had on Broad Oak is palpable. Children are using the 6 Habits language to reflect on and resolve their own playground issues and the needs of our vulnerable children are better met.
