Solutions to Meet the Needs of Children

One Goal’s Above and Beyond programme offers primary schools a unique service which supports children in a wide range of development areas, including personal learning support, emotional well-being and physical activity.  At the heart of the provision at Broad Oak is ‘The 6 Habits’ programme which focuses on character education to teach children in six simple steps how to develop a strong character and learn successful positive habits. These include the importance of children having a positive attitude, being 100% responsible for their behaviour and showing personal courage in their own lives.

In addition to the 6 Habits, primary schools can choose from a selection of programme elements, with One Goal developing a personalised framework to meet the needs of each individual school.  This tailored approach is highly-valued at Broad Oak Primary School, as Headteacher, Kevin Corteen, explains:

“The way that One Goal works is very impressive.  I like the fact that although the company has an outline service offer, it is committed to meeting the needs of individual schools and creating solutions which are bespoke to the needs of their children.”

Valued as Key Part of the School Team

One major advantage to having a full-time One Goal children’s coach in place at primary schools is the fact that coaches can fast become valued team members.  Ben Rowe regularly takes part in staff meetings at Broad Oak and works with the school’s teaching staff when it comes to allocating children with different intervention needs and discussing the best provision. This often includes issues such as tackling bullying and helping those children who struggle to form friendships.  Ben has also been able to work flexibly with other initiatives taking place at the school, and has recently started delivering his One Goal service as part of the children’s forest school outdoor activity.  When speaking about Ben, Broad Oak pupils describe him as “funny, friendly, sporty, cheerful, joyful, kind, and supportive.”

Committed to Helping the School Succeed

Talking about his role at Broad Oak Primary School, Ben, says:

“It’s great to be able to include One Goal programme elements in everyday learning, for example, linking the 6 Habits of Character to the PE  sessions.  This link has resulted in more of an understanding of the connection between attitude, effort and friendship within sport, and how each individual person can influence any game they play by having the courage to use their skills.”

“In only a relatively short space of time, the children at Broad Oak are responding well. Issues such as the decisions they make and their behaviour during their time at school has been given more focus and I’m confident that as my role continues, we’ll see more positive change.  I’m looking forward to seeing the children at Broad Oak continuing to learn how their behaviour and attitude can influence their work and how they are perceived by other people.”

In summarising, Kevin Corteen, comments:

“The impact that One Goal has had on Broad Oak is palpable.  Children are using the 6 Habits language to reflect on and resolve their own playground issues and the needs of our vulnerable children are better met.”

One Goal Managing Director, Adam Eccleston, concludes:

“Working with Broad Oak Primary School really is a positive experience. Kevin and his team of dedicated staff members have really embraced the One Goal concept and their focus on improving their pupils’ emotional and physical well-being through our service is really paying off.  We hope to continue our partnership work with Broad Oak well into the future, tailoring our provision to its pupils’ ongoing needs and supporting the great work of its teaching staff.”
